On Friday, China, Pakistan, and other founding members signed a convention in Hong Kong that Beijing hopes will enhance the city’s international standing and be comparable to the International Court of Justice.
The action is being taken in the midst of escalating geopolitical tensions that have been made worse by US President Donald Trump’s global trade war and increased the likelihood of a severe global economic crisis.
Leader John Lee stated earlier this week that the mediation body would have the same standing as the Permanent Court of Arbitration of the United Nations in The Hague and the International Court of Justice, with the goal of solidifying Hong Kong’s position as a premier hub for resolving international disputes.
