ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court’s July 12, 2024, ruling deeming the PTI eligible for reserved seats went beyond the constitutional authority conferred by Article 187(1) of the Constitution, according to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
“The relief granted in the majority judgment to PTI is beyond the scope of power under Article 187(1) of the Constitution,” the election commission stated in its written response filed in the Supreme Court against its July 12 ruling.
The top court declared last year that the former ruling party was qualified to receive reserved seats. A 13-member court led by Qazi Faez Isa, the chief justice of Pakistan (CJP) at the time, rendered the decision.
