US says it will start revoking visas for Chinese students

Trump govt has sought to ramp up deportations as part of wide-ranging efforts to fulfill its hardline immigration agenda

WASHINGTON: On Wednesday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio declared that the US would begin “aggressively” canceling Chinese students’ visas, especially those who are studying in vital subjects or have ties to the Chinese Communist Party.

The action would jeopardize a significant revenue stream for American universities and a vital talent pool for US tech firms if it is implemented for a large portion of the hundreds of thousands of Chinese university students studying in the US.

As part of broader initiatives to carry out its tough immigration agenda, President Donald Trump’s administration has attempted to increase deportations and cancel student visas.

Rubio said in a statement that the State Department will also update the requirements for visas in order to improve the examination of all upcoming Chinese visa applications.
