WINNIPEG: As wildfires spread across Central and Western Canada, Manitoba proclaimed a state of emergency on Wednesday and ordered thousands of residents to leave the province’s eastern and northern regions.
At a press conference, Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew stated that 17,000 people, including those from the city of Flin Flon, needed to evacuate immediately. According to him, federal armed personnel were coming to assist in transporting evacuees, and many would be set up at community centers and soccer fields in Winnipeg and other locations.
“This is the largest evacuation in many Manitobans’ living memory and this will require significant resources and co-operation from all levels of government,” Kinew said in a press release.
