NEW YORK: In an attempt to become the city’s first South Asian and Muslim mayor, 33-year-old Queens Democratic Socialist assemblyman Zohran Mamdani has entered the mayoral contest.
Mamdani was born in Kampala, Uganda, to filmmaker Mira Nair and an Indian-origin academic father from Columbia University. She relocated to New York when she was seven years old, and she has been a member of the New York State Assembly since 2021.
With a campaign based on accessibility, affordability, and community-driven governance, he has become a grassroots favorite with the support of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA).
Additionally, US Republican Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez claimed in a statement that the state member had given him a crucial endorsement.
