LOS ANGELES—On Sunday, California National Guard troops were sent into the streets of Los Angeles to assist in putting an end to a third day of demonstrations against President Donald Trump’s immigration enforcement policies. However, the Democratic governor of the state criticized the deployment, saying it was illegal.
While police and demonstrators engaged in separate protests over federal immigration sweeps in Los Angeles, National Guard troops were positioned around federal government buildings.
A number of gatherings were deemed “unlawful assemblies” by the LA police, who claimed that some demonstrators threw bottles, concrete, and other items at them. According to CCTV evidence, a number of Waymo autonomous vehicles from Alphabet were set on fire on a downtown roadway on Sunday night.
The police department posted on social media, saying, “Arrests are being initiated,”
