WASHINGTON: As the Republican president continues to dominate Congress with no resistance, the US Senate early Thursday approved President Donald Trump’s proposal to reduce billions of dollars in financing for public broadcasting and overseas aid.
Trump’s proposal to reduce $9 billion in previously authorized expenditure by Congress was passed by the Senate by a vote of 51 to 48.
In addition to eliminating the $1.1 billion that the Corporation for Public Broadcasting was supposed to receive over the next two years, the plan mostly slashes programs that aid foreign nations affected by disease, conflict, and natural disasters.
Many Republicans, including Trump, contend that public broadcasting is an unnecessary investment.
