In the highly anticipated merger of Telenor and PTCL, which has important ramifications for Pakistan’s next 5G spectrum auction, the federal government has stepped up to mediate the matter.
Government sources claim that Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar has been tasked by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif with finding a quick solution to the merger problem. The decision was made after the PM recently met with a senior delegation from Etisalat, the telecom behemoth based in the United Arab Emirates that owns a significant portion of PTCL.
The Etisalat delegation formally asked the prime minister to step in and speed up the merger process at the meeting.
