After months of negotiating, European Commission leader Ursula von der Leyen and US President Donald Trump announced that they had secured an EU-US trade agreement, surpassing Trump’s deadline of August 1st. It was all smiles and handshakes.
The fact that Trump threatened to impose 30% tariffs months ago was met with comfort by many European negotiators. In order to prevent sweeping tariffs, other nations are nonetheless rushing to finalize agreements with the US.
However, following the announcement of the US-EU accord last weekend, not only has opposition increased, but it has also been evident that many specifics are still pending, that there are a number of differences between the two parties, and that certain EU nations will be disproportionately impacted.
