According to interim leader Muhammad Yunus, the country’s first elections since a major revolt ousted the government last year would take place in February 2026.
“On behalf of the interim government, I will write a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner requesting that the election be arranged before Ramadan in February 2026,” Yunus stated during a program featuring the anniversary of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s overthrow one year prior.
Yunus, an 85-year-old Nobel Peace Prize winner, is serving as the caretaker government’s chief adviser until elections, and he has announced that he will resign following the outcome.
“We will step into the final and most important phase after delivering this speech to you, and that is the transfer of power to an elected government” , added the president.
