When the SNP was elected to the European Parliament in 2019, the former MSP, who led Scottish Labour from 2015 to 2017, was still a member of the Scottish Parliament.
Before the UK left the EU, Ms. Dugdale claimed to have supported her longtime adversaries in the 2019 European Parliament election.
The former MSP asserted that she had supported Labour in every election since. She is currently the director of the John Smith Centre at the University of Glasgow.
When she voted for the SNP, Ms. Dugdale was still a member of the Scottish Parliament and led Scottish Labour from 2015 to 2017.
She is married to Jenny Gilruth, the education secretary for the SNP, and has left the Labour Party.
For a forthcoming documentary on Scotland’s general election campaign, she spoke with BBC Radio 4 and said, “I voted SNP once in my life and that was in the European Union elections immediately after Brexit, where I was so mad about Brexit.”
“I felt I could vote for the SNP in that European Union election, because that in no way could be construed as a vote for independence,” Ms. Dugdale stated, adding that she intended to register her vote for the SNP for “that reason alone”.
