Imran Khan confirms writing letter to IMF linking new loan to election audit

RAWALPINDI: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan said on Friday that he has submitted a letter to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) requesting that the global lender conduct an audit of the election results before sanctioning any fresh loan for Islamabad.

“A letter has been composed to the IMF and will be sent today. In such a case, who will repay the country’s loan? Khan spoke to the media at a £190 million reference hearing at Adiala Jail.

The previous prime minister cautioned that the loan will increase poverty, and that as long as there is investment in the country, the country’s loans will continue to rise.

Khan’s letter update comes a day after PTI senator Ali Zafar said that the party’s founder has decided to write a letter to the global lender pushing it to conduct an audit of the February 8 election before continuing talks with Islamabad on a fresh loan programme.

However, it remains to be seen whether the PTI founder’s letter would result in the desired outcome, as the IMF has shown willingness to cooperate with the new Pakistani administration while ignoring his demand.

Meanwhile, former finance minister Ishaq Dar said the letter is meaningless, adding that if the PTI founder wrote against the country’s national interest, it is unacceptable.

“Writing anything for personal benefit is disgraceful. PTI founder’s letter will have no significance,” Dar, a senior leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), told media outside the Punjab Assembly.
