Concerns about Gmail’s suspected closure spread quickly after a viral post on X stated that the popular email service was “coming to a close,” according to Wio News.
The message included a screenshot of an email labeled ‘Google is sunsetting Gmail,’ which sparked panic among netizens who feared the death of the popular communication network.
The reported message from Google in the screenshot said, “After years of connecting millions around the world, enabling seamless communication, and creating innumerable connections, Gmail’s journey is coming to an end. Gmail will be officially sunsetted on August 1, 2024, bringing the service to an end.
This comment raised concerns that Gmail will no longer support sending, receiving, or storing emails.
The post garnered enormous popularity, with over 4 million views by Thursday evening. However, other individuals questioned the veracity of the screenshot, with one expressing doubt about its legitimacy.
Google quickly responded to the rumours, clarifying via its official Gmail X account that “Gmail is here to stay.” The business reassured customers that the viral message was a fake and confirmed that Gmail will continue to operate normally.
Furthermore, Google noted a recent modification to Gmail’s default appearance in January 2024, which transitioned from ‘basic HTML’ to a more vibrant layout, underlining that this was the only change made to the platform.
In light of Google’s reaction, rumors around the alleged Gmail shutdown have been refuted, emphasizing the importance of verifying information before spreading alarm among users.
