The Japan-based company sent an email to its employees informing them that the proposals called for the closure of the Playstation London studio.
The division’s departing chief executive informed staff via email that other UK personnel in a variety of functions might be affected.
In his letter, Jim Ryan, who is scheduled to retire in March, stated that the company needed to “future ready ourselves to set the business up for what lies ahead” because the “industry has changed immensely”.
“We have taken the very difficult decision to declare that, subject to local legislation and consultation procedures, we intend to start a global workforce reduction of around 8%, or roughly 900 workers.
“Employees across the globe, including our studios, are impacted,” he stated.
Among Sony’s other studios is the US-based Insomniac Games, which produced titles like Naughty Dog and Spider-Man 2.
