The alliance’s drills now focus on Moscow. One of the primary stated objectives of Exercise Steadfast Defender is to deter Russia. It is the alliance’s largest operation since the end of the Cold War, involving 90,000 military personnel and taking place throughout Europe’s eastern flank over the next three months.
Steadfast Defender is also the first test of NATO’s new military plans, which are geared to transfer troops and equipment quickly and on a large scale to support any ally under assault. And it’s an endorsement of its actual aim.
Sweden and Finland join NATO’s largest military drill in decades.
Nato used to try to avoid making direct mention of Russia when undertaking military operations. Not least for fear of being provoked. However, Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine has changed all that.
