In April, World Athletics made the historic announcement that it will be the first sport in Olympic history to provide prize money in this summer’s Games.
Each of the 48 disciplines’ winners will get US$50,000 (£39,400).
All three of the track and field medalists from the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics will receive prize money.
Olympic rowing gold winner Redgrave, who competed in five consecutive games between 1984 and 2000, said: “You’re giving money to people who already have it, but all those gold medalists in athletics are capable of earning significant money before and certainly after Paris.”
It turns into a “us versus them” scenario. I made more money from retiring than I ever did from rowing, but even though I fared okay, I oppose it.
Redgrave went on to say that he would rather “that money” go “to other sports.”
