Frank Bainimarama, the long-serving former prime leader of Fiji, was sentenced to one year in prison for interfering with a police corruption investigation.
One of the most well-known politicians in the Pacific Islands, Bainimarama, 70, served as the leader of Fiji for over 15 years before being elected out of office in 2022.
He was also a prominent advocate on the global scene, pushing for vulnerable Pacific nations to take action on climate change.
Following the decision on Thursday by the High Court, he was carried away in handcuffs.
He was found guilty last month of obstructing the course of justice while a police probe into university fraud was underway.
The prosecution claimed that he had instructed his friend, the former Fijian Police Commissioner, to cease an inquiry into financial crimes at the University of South.
