KARACHI: On Sunday, Muhammad Zubair, a former governor of Sindh, announced his resignation from the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) due to certain “reservations.”
Speaking to Geo News, Zubair that he will discuss his future political plans with his “friends” before deciding on a course of action. However, he did not specify which specific reasons precipitated his departure.
Zubair follows a number of prominent figures who have lately broken with the ruling party, such as former finance minister Miftah Ismail and prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi.
The lawmaker has expressed dissatisfaction with the leadership of the party and has been critical of the current administration, which was established following the elections on February 8. He also recently stated that he was in the party “like Abbasi”.
Abbasi had applied for the registration of a new political party with the Pakistani Election Commission on April 8, albeit it is unclear if he will join one or not.
In addition, Ismail is in favor of a new party being formed by people with “proven integrity and competence”.
In an interview with Geo News, Zubair stated that he supported Nawaz’s resistance strategy and that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif should support a conciliatory position.
