Feminist themes were prevalent in Barbie. Actress America Ferrera is now addressing the criticism that the popular movie received for emphasizing the women’s rights struggle.
The Ugly Betty star stated, “We can know things and still need to hear them out loud,” in an interview with The New York Times. It’s still therapeutic at times.”
stating, “There are a lot of people who need Feminism 101, whole generations of girls who are just coming up now and who don’t have words for the culture that they’re being raised in.”
“And, guys and men who might not have ever given feminist theory any thought,” she went on.
“If you are well-versed in feminism, then it might seem like an oversimplification, but there are entire countries that banned this film for a reason,” said the 39-year-old.
The native of California went on to explain, “To say that something that is maybe foundational, or, in some people’s view, basic feminism, isn’t needed is an oversimplification.”
“Assuming that everybody is on the same level of knowing and understanding the experience of womanhood is an oversimplification,” she stated.
Gloria, played by America, assists Margot Robbie in a number of ways and gives a well-known monologue in the movie.
