In a social media post Five-time Tour winner Merckx, a Belgian, wrote: “Mark, congratulations on your historic victory.
Since taking home his 34th stage victory in 2021, Cavendish and Merckx had shared the record for the most Tour stage victories.
At 39 years old, he has surpassed a total that was previously thought to be nearly unattainable for any rider in the contemporary era, much less a sprinter. This accomplishment is indicative of the longevity and scope of his career accomplishments.
