ISLAMABAD: Pakistan expressed solidarity with the people of Bangladesh on Wednesday, praying for peace and normalcy in their current condition of things, as the country witnessed a historic revolt that has overthrown more than 10 years of Sheikh Hasina’s administration.
“The Government and people of Pakistan stand in solidarity with the people of Bangladesh, sincerely hoping for a peaceful and swift return to normalcy,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a statement.
The FO went on to say that Pakistan is optimistic about the “harmonious future” for Bangladeshi people because of their “resilient spirit and unity.”
Beginning as student-led protests over government employment policies in July, anti-government protests in Bangladesh came to an end on Monday when the nation’s “autocratic” prime minister Hasina fled to India and the military announcing it would form an interim government. After 15 arduous years, her dictatorship came to an end after more than a month of murderous protests that claimed the lives of at least 300 people.
A significant development in regional geopolitics, Pakistan’s declaration endorsing the people of Bangladesh comes as Islamabad’s relations with Dhaka had previously been overshadowed by Hasina’s government’s cozying up to New Delhi.
