ISLAMABAD: The foreign ministry of Afghanistan, which is headed by the Taliban, said that it has named its first accredited ambassador to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). China is the only other nation to have accepted an envoy at that level.
A request for comment was not immediately answered by the UAE foreign ministry.
Only Beijing has publicly accepted the credentials of an ambassador, and no foreign city has formally recognised the authority of the Taliban.
In addition, the Taliban have dispatched envoys to lead missions as “charge d’affaires” in a number of nations, notably Pakistan, their neighbor.
Mawlawi Badreddin Haqqani was nominated as the foreign ministry’s ambassador and gave his credentials to the assistant undersecretary for protocol affairs of the UAE’s foreign ministry, according to a statement released late on Wednesday by the Taliban-run ministry.
