The Pakistani Election Commission (ECP) investigated a number of political parties for violating the constitution’s mandate that women receive 5% of the tickets for elections.
To address the matter, a four-person bench chaired by Nisar Durrani, an ECP member, held a hearing.
The ECP examined data from multiple parties about ticket allocation during the hearing. For example, according to the counsel for BNP Mengal, the party had no women among its 27 candidates for the provincial legislature and none among its 11 candidates for the National legislature.
According to ECP authorities, this reduced BNP Mengal’s rate of ticket issuance to women to just 3.8%.
Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP), on the other hand, defended its record by asserting that they had provided tickets to every woman who applied.
