Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan has written to the United Nations alerting them to the potential constitutional changes’ potential threat to judicial independence and human rights in the nation, should they come into effect. This comes as the ruling coalition government works to secure the necessary votes to carry out its planned amendments, as The News reported on Tuesday.
Citing doughtystreet.com.uk, the publication further stated that Khan’s family has instructed both Jennifer Robinson and Tatyana Eatwell, as well as Edward Fitzgerald KC, to undertake international advocacy and UN engagement on his behalf. The former prime minister has made an urgent appeal to Margaret Satterthwaite, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Independence of Judges and Lawyers. The imprisoned former premier has previously written to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) requesting that the global lender conduct an audit of the polls that were allegedly rigged on February 8 before granting Islamabad a new loan. This is not the first time he has written to an international organization about domestic political issues.
The current government reacted strongly to the move, with ministers censured the cricketer-turned-politician for allegedly jeopardizing the stability of the nation’s economy for personal gain.
