Two of the top-ranked players on the PGA Tour and two of the biggest personalities from the Saudi-backed LIV Golf series will square off in an 18-hole challenge. The location and date of the made-for-television event have already been confirmed by the organizers.
The competition’s specifics, dubbed “The Showdown,” were revealed in the midst of continuing discussions on a potential merger between the PGA Tour and LIV’s financiers, the Saudi Arabian Investment Fund (PIF).
The competition’s final format is still pending.
The first “The Match,” which was Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson’s precursor to “The Showdown,” was held at Shadow Creek Golf Course.
World No. 1 Scheffler has won eight events so far this year, including the Masters at Augusta in April and the Olympic gold medal in Paris. McIlroy, a four-time major winner, has triumphed in the Dubai Desert Classic, the Wells Fargo Championship in 2024, and the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.
