Sydney: A historic assessment released Monday, ahead of Canberra’s unveiling of emission reduction targets this week, warned that by 2050, rising oceans and flooding brought on by climate change will threaten the homes and livelihoods of over a million Australians, while heat-related illness mortality will skyrocket.
Rising temperatures will have “cascading, compounding, concurrent” effects on living in Australia, which is home to over 27 million people, according to the long-awaited national climate risk assessment.
“Climate change is a reality right now. Climate Minister Chris Bowen stated, “It’s too late to avoid any impacts; it’s a live reality now, not a forecast, projection, or prediction.”
