The Baloch Liberation Army, a terrorist group outlawed in Pakistan, denounced the assault and denied any role in the attack that claimed the lives of at least 21 mine workers.
Using rifles, rockets, and hand grenades, dozens of assailants broke into a series of tiny private coal mines in Duki, Balochistan, on Friday. Some miners were killed while they slept, and others were shot after they were positioned.
In an email sent late on Saturday, the Baloch Liberation Army declared, “Baloch Liberation Army condemns the massacre of 21 Pashtun workers in Dukki, making it clear that our organization has no involvement in this tragic incident.”
The attack on the Junaid Coal Co. mines in the mineral-rich province of Balochistan, which borders Afghanistan and Iran, has not been attributed to any particular group.
