Amid a diplomatic dispute, Trudeau accused India of making a “massive mistake.”

If Delhi was responsible for the assassination of a Sikh separatist leader on Canadian soil last year, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said that Delhi made a "massive mistake" that Canada could not overlook.

Two days after Canadian officials accused India of participating in extortions, murders, and other violent crimes against Indian dissidents on Canadian soil, Trudeau made the remarks.

Both nations dismissed top diplomats and envoys after Canada made the accusations on Monday, escalating already tense relations.

The accusations have been dismissed by India as “preposterous,” and the country has accused Trudeau of using Canada’s sizable Sikh population for political advantage.

Angry again, India referred to Trudeau’s actions as “cavalier” on Wednesday.

In a statement, foreign ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated, “Canada has shown us absolutely no proof to back up the grave accusations that it has decided to make against India and Indian officials.

Prime Minister Trudeau is solely to blame for the harm this careless behavior has done to India-Canada ties.
Prior to a public probe into foreign meddling in Canadian politics, Trudeau has criticized India’s handling of the June 2023 investigation into the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

Later that summer, Trudeau claimed to have been briefed on the assassination and to have obtained intelligence that made it “incredibly clear” that India was responsible.
