At the beginning of the war, which was brought on by the historic Hamas attacks that claimed over 1,200 lives and took 251 hostage, Sinwar vanished.
With thousands of Israeli military attempting to find him using drones, electronic eavesdropping equipment, and human spies, that was hardly shocking.
“Yahya Sinwar is the commander… and he is a dead man,” said Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, who was then the spokesperson for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).
It was believed that Sinwar and his bodyguards had been huddled underground for the majority of the previous year, sheltering in tunnels beneath Gaza and chatting.
There were also concerns that he would use Israeli detainees as human shields to encircle himself.
However, the IDF claims that soldiers in southern Gaza ultimately killed Sinwar inside a building where no hostages were visible. After utilizing fingerprint and dental records to identify his remains, it declared his death on Thursday.
“Today, our valiant soldiers killed the arch-terrorist who killed thousands of Israelis and abducted hundreds of our citizens, carrying out the worst massacre in our people’s history since the Holocaust.”
