Manchester City midfielder Rodri has hinted that his past at Atletico Madrid would not stop him from joining Real Madrid in the future. The 29-year-old Spanish international stated, “you can’t turn down the best clubs in the world.”
Since moving to City from Atletico in 2019, Rodri has made 293 appearances and won 12 major trophies under Pep Guardiola, including four Premier League titles and one Champions League.
Contract Situation
Rodri’s contract with Manchester City expires next summer. He said he plans to “sit down and talk” with the club but admitted he would like to return to Spain eventually.
Considering Real Madrid
Despite playing 47 times for Atletico, Rodri did not rule out joining City’s city rivals, Real Madrid. He noted that many players have made similar moves over time. Examples include Thibaut Courtois and Alvaro Morata, who both played for Atletico and Real Madrid after stints in Chelsea.
Rodri addressed reports that Real president Florentino Perez admires him, saying, “I don’t know – they don’t talk to me directly. They’d talk to my agent.”
Recent Career and Fitness
Rodri has featured in 18 Premier League matches this season, returning from a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament suffered in 2024. Internationally, he has earned 59 caps for Spain and helped his country win the 2024 European Championship and the 2023 Nations League. He has been called up by Luis de la Fuente for upcoming friendlies against Serbia and Egypt as he targets a spot in this summer’s World Cup in the US, Mexico, and Canada.
Rodri’s comments suggest that a future move to La Liga remains a possibility, even with his Atletico history. His experience and success at City make him a coveted player for top European clubs.
