US Hotels Fear Weak World Cup Tourism as Bookings Fall Short Tourism expectations fail to match reality US hotels are worried the upcoming World Cup will not deliver the expected tourism boost. Many host cities are reporting lower-than-expected bookings, raising doubts about the event’s economic impact. A report from the American Hotel & Lodging Association shows demand is falling behind forecasts across most locations. The group represents more than 32,000 hotel properties and a large share of franchised hotels in the United States. Conflict between booking data and ticket sales The association says hotel demand does not match FIFA’s claim that over five million tickets have already been sold. It warns that the expected financial gains from the tournament could be lower than projected. Accusations over hotel room block bookings The report also criticizes FIFA for reserving large numbers of hotel rooms in advance. According to the association, this created artificial demand and pushed prices higher in early stages of booking. Later, FIFA cancelled a significant portion of those reservations. Hotel operators say this left gaps in availability and disrupted normal pricing patterns. FIFA has rejected these claims and does not agree with the criticism. Other factors behind weak demand Hotels say several issues are discouraging visitors. High ticket prices for matches are one concern. Expensive local transport and taxes are also adding pressure. Some operators also point to political tensions as another reason international travel interest has slowed. Economic outlook remains uncertain With lower bookings and mixed signals from ticket sales, the hospitality sector is now unsure about the World Cup’s overall economic benefit. Many hotels are preparing for weaker-than-expected revenue during the tournament period.

Lauren Laverne Reveals Smouldering Myeloma Diagnosis, Says She Feels Well Television and radio presenter Lauren Laverne has shared that she has been diagnosed with smouldering myeloma, a rare blood and bone marrow disorder that can sometimes develop into blood cancer. Despite the diagnosis, she reassured fans that she currently feels well and does not need medical treatment. The 48 year old broadcaster explained that the condition has no symptoms in her case. Doctors will continue to monitor her health through regular blood tests, MRI scans, and bone marrow examinations. She also said that the chance of the condition progressing into blood cancer is considered low. A Condition Found During Routine Monitoring Lauren Laverne revealed that doctors discovered the disorder during routine medical monitoring following her previous cancer diagnosis. She said the condition is unrelated to her earlier illness or a recent surgery. According to Laverne, many people with smouldering myeloma never realize they have it because it often causes no symptoms. Cancer survivors are more likely to receive an early diagnosis because they usually undergo regular health checks. Living With a Chronic Blood Disorder Although there is currently no cure for smouldering myeloma, Laverne said she does not require treatment at this stage. However, she explained that the condition slightly weakens her immune system, making regular medical monitoring essential. She admitted that receiving another serious diagnosis within two years has been emotionally challenging. Even so, she remains positive and hopes that sharing her experience will encourage others facing similar health issues. Message About Early Detection Laverne praised her family doctor for investigating her ongoing low iron levels instead of dismissing them. She encouraged people to speak up about persistent health concerns and seek specialist advice if something does not feel right. She believes early diagnosis can make a significant difference and urged others to advocate for their own health by asking questions and requesting further tests when necessary. Taking a Short Break Before Returning The presenter said she plans to take a short holiday before returning to work as usual. She also sent her support to everyone living with similar conditions and thanked those who have supported her throughout her health journey. Her announcement has drawn widespread messages of encouragement from fans and colleagues, who wished her good health and a smooth recovery.

AI Creates Brand New Viruses

According to US researchers, artificial intelligence has been used to create whole new viruses that can proliferate in a lab.

AI has successfully created whole genomes for the first time.

The 16 new viruses that resulted were designed to infect bacteria without endangering humans.

The discovery has been described as a “very significant turning point” in research that may usher in a new age of medical treatment. However, researchers have cautioned that viruses created by AI pose “urgent” security and safety risks.

AI technologies are developing quickly and have already been applied to the creation of novel antibiotics.

But,compared to creating a brand-new, functional virus from start, it is rather easy.

AI Designs Complete Virus Genome

According to Brian Hie, an assistant professor at Stanford University, “This is a next step in the complexity that can be designed by generative AI. This is the first time generative AI has been used to design a complete genome.

It’s something that can replicate and have other functions inside cells. This was new territory for us.”

The technique functions similarly to huge language models that anticipate text sequences, such as ChatGPT.

In this case, the Evo1 and Evo2 AI models anticipate the language of life instead of words.

The genetic codes of bacteria, viruses, plants, and humans were used to train the AI models.

After then, they were improved to create a particular kind of virus called a bacteriophage, which only infects particular bacterial species.

AI Designed Viruses Kill E. coli

They found the phage were active in the early hours of the morning, according to Samuel King, a PhD candidate at the lab.

After placing the phage on petri dishes with a layer of bacteria growing on them, the scientists looked for signs that their new viruses were having fun.

We were starting to see these different places, so it was incredibly exciting,” King says.

Computers Enter New Biology Era

From atoms to computer bits
Since viruses are not living things, artificial intelligence would need to advance much before it could produce life things.

The phage’s genetic code consists of around 5,400 base pairs, or letters. A live cell’s genome can be as little as 500,000 base pairs. Three billion base pairs make up the human genome.

They were “definitely interested in working towards” that, according to Hie. “It would probably be a lot of work, but not impossible” to try some basic organisms.

The discovery was a “very significant turning point” because, for the “first time in history, we are beginning to design biology on a computer,” according to Prof. Marc Güell of the synthetic biology lab at Pompeu Fabra University in Spain.

AI Boosts Future Medical Innovation

He said that it “allows us to dream of exciting possibilities for tackling humanity’s greatest challenges” including creating antibodies that might be used in immunotherapy. The phages to combat illness, and enzymes to cure genetic diseases.

The work is a “significant milestone,” according to Prof. Patrick Cai, head of synthetic genomics at the Manchester Institute of Biotechnology.

The relevance goes well beyond phages; it implies that genome language models are starting to pick up the design principles that evolution has encoded, paving the way for AI-assisted genome composition.
