Talks signal progress between US and Iran
JD Vance said Iran has agreed in principle to allow international nuclear inspectors back into the country. He called it an important step in ongoing negotiations.
He added that discussions with the International Atomic Energy Agency could begin soon, possibly within the same day.
US Iran talks are now focused on building a path toward a final agreement.
Roadmap toward a possible deal
Mediators from Qatar and Pakistan said both sides have agreed on a roadmap aimed at reaching a final deal within about 60 days.
Officials described early talks as productive. Negotiators said the process has created a base for further steps toward a settlement.
Vance said the discussions had created a strong starting point for future negotiations.
Nuclear inspections and monitoring return
A key part of the talks involves restoring international monitoring of Iran’s nuclear sites.
Iran previously limited access after conflict related strikes on some nuclear facilities. Later, remaining inspectors were withdrawn from the country.
The proposed agreement would reopen access for inspectors and restart monitoring work under international supervision.
Iran continues to state that its nuclear program is peaceful and focused on civilian energy needs.
Strait of Hormuz and regional security
The talks also include wider regional issues. These include possible reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and reducing military tensions in the region.
Both sides have also discussed steps linked to a wider ceasefire framework that could include multiple regional fronts.
Background to the nuclear dispute
The nuclear issue has been a long standing point of tension.
In 2015, Iran and major world powers including the US, China, Russia, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom signed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. The deal limited Iran’s nuclear activity and allowed inspections by the IAEA.
In 2018, the US withdrew from the agreement, which led to rising tensions and reduced inspection access in later years.
Current status of negotiations
Recent talks held in Switzerland included participation from Iranian and US teams, with technical discussions continuing after initial meetings.
Iranian negotiators have since left the venue, while further technical level talks are expected to continue.
Officials from both sides say progress has been made, but no final agreement has been reached.
