Ukraine claims it destroyed Russian tank landing ship

If verified, Ukraine's claims on Tuesday about having destroyed a Russian Navy tank landing ship during an attack in Crimea would be the third significant loss of Russian military hardware in less than a week. Commander of the Ukrainian Air Force Mykola Oleshchuk commended those responsible for “the destruction of the Novocherkassk large landing ship” in a post on Telegram while the ship was in the port of Feodosia in Crimea, the Ukrainian peninsula that Russia unlawfully invaded in 2014. The report cannot be independently verified by CNN, but footage shared on social media appears to show massive explosions in the Feodosia port. In a statement carried by the state-run TASS news agency, the Russian Defense Ministry claimed that the Novocherkassk had been "damaged" by an attack by the Ukrainians.

Security has been stepped up in Germany and France in advance of New Year’s Eve festivities.

Prior to New Year's Eve celebrations, France and Germany increased security after receiving concerns that the prolonged conflict between Israel and Hamas may increase the likelihood of terrorist strikes. In response to a report suggesting that Islamist organizations might be organizing an attack on the city's renowned cathedral on New Year's Eve, police in the German city of Cologne are increasing their force. During a press conference, Officer Martin Lotz announced that submachine gun-wielding officers wearing protective vests would be stationed across the city. The gothic cathedral in the city declared via a social media statement that it will only be open for church services till further notice "due to the current security situation." In the meanwhile, Berlin police are working to increase public awareness

Navalny describes the “freezing” conditions in his Arctic confinement before a Russian court.

Alexey Navalny, a jailed critic of the Kremlin, appeared via video link to a Moscow court to present his case against the Siberian penal colony where he is being imprisoned. He described the “freezing” circumstances inside his prison. Speaking before the Supreme Court in Moscow, the opposition leader detailed the inhumane circumstances he is facing in Artic jail, to which he was moved last month. He claimed to be subjected to frigid temperatures and a 10-minute meal restriction. "Eating in ten minutes is not possible," he informed the Moscow Supreme Court justice. "Eating within 10 minutes of each other every day makes this meal a fairly complicated process." He went on, "The punishment cell is frequently an extremely cold place.

Are Taiwan’s future prospects being hinted at by China’s moves in the South China Sea?

The Sierra Madre, a rusty World War II-era landing craft that shelters a small group of Philippine marines and acts as the structural cornerstone of the Second Thomas Shoal atoll, is located 120 miles off the coast of Palawan, Philippines. The Permanent Court of Arbitration at the Hague ruled in 2016 that China lacked legal standing to assert its historical rights over the majority of the South China Sea, and that the shoal belonged to the Philippines. Following the court's decision, Beijing made a strong public display of its rejection of it by accelerating the construction of multiple artificial islands equipped with military installations to support its claim to sovereignty over nearly the whole South China Sea.

China deploys the Einstein probe, which is meant to search for X-ray bursts and is shaped like a lobster’s eyes.

This week saw the launch of a spacecraft intended to search the sky for X-ray bursts that may shed light on enigmatic events connected to black holes and merging stars. According to a press release from the European Space Agency, China's Long March 2C rocket carried the Einstein probe, named for the renowned theoretical physicist of German descent. The spacecraft was launched on Tuesday. The Long March rockets of China are operated by the Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, which verified the successful launch on social media. The European Space Agency, the German Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences worked together to build the spacecraft. Finding evidence of X-ray bursts could aid researchers in gaining a deeper comprehension of the high-energy processes. Hunting for X-ray blasts The Einstein probe…

A turning point in Ukraine

To celebrate the Christian festival Epiphany, which honors Christ's baptism, throngs of people braved the bitter cold on January 6 and dove into the Black Sea in the Ukrainian coastal city of Odesa. The cold plunge this year held even more significance. It marked the first occasion that the war-torn nation observed the Christian feast day according to the Gregorian calendar (on January 6) rather than the Julian calendar (on January 19). Ukraine moved its Christmas celebrations in line with many Western dates last year, passing legislation in an effort to further detach itself from customs widely followed in Russia. However, it has been nearly hard to separate oneself from Russia's impending presence during the last several weeks in particular, with intense missile barrages.
