The United Kingdom has urged the federal government to fulfill its responsibilities under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) in response to the sentencing of 25 accused individuals involved in the May 9 events by military courts.
“Military courts undermine the right to a fair trial and lack transparency and independent scrutiny,” a Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office spokeswoman said in a statement released on Monday.
The representative did, however, state that the UK respects Pakistan’s right to self-govern its own legal system.
Up to 25 participants in the May 9, 2023, attacks on state installations received sentences ranging from two to ten years in prison from military courts.
“In [the] first phase, the Field General Court Martial (FGCM) has issued the penalties to 25 accused.”
