The British cricket body (ECB) must speak out against the Taliban’s “crackdown” on women, according to a group of politicians who called on England to boycott their Champions Trophy match against Afghanistan next month.
Since regaining power in 2021, the Taliban has imposed restrictions on women and girls’ freedom of movement, forced them to cover their faces and bodies, and limited their access to school and employment.
In violation of the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) regulations, women and girls have also been prohibited from participating in sports and gyms. The Afghanistan women’s squad was subsequently dissolved, and following 2021, a number of its members left the nation.
On February 26, England will play Afghanistan in a group-stage encounter at Lahore.
