The first South Asian and Muslim lawmaker elected to the Texas House of Representatives is Dr. Suleman Lalani. He was chosen to represent the cities of Sugar Land, Stafford, Richmond, and Meadows Place in House District 76 for the 88th Legislative Session in 2022.
He won a second term in 2024 and was elected to the 89th Legislative Session. In the entire Texas Legislature, Dr. Lalani is the sole primary care physician. The American Board of Internal Medicine has granted him quadruple board certification in internal medicine, hospice and palliative medicine, and geriatric medicine. Additionally, Dr. Lalani holds certifications in long-term care and post-acute care.
According to Dr. Lalani, he helps both “ailing patients” in his dual roles as a physician and a politician.
