The service, which generated notifications that looked like they were coming from within news organizations’ apps, had been under increasing pressure to be discontinued by the internet giant.
“We are working on improvements and will make them available in a future software update,” a representative for Apple stated.
Reporters Without Borders (RSF), a journalism organization, claimed it demonstrated the risks of implementing new features too quickly.
“Innovation must never come at the expense of the right of citizens to receive reliable information,” it stated in a statement.
“This feature should not be rolled out again until there is zero risk that it will publish inaccurate headlines,” Vincent Berthier of RSF added.
