England needed 18 from the final five balls to defeat a formidable 186 in Canberra, where Heather Knight was undefeated at 43 until the rain stopped play.
With a final score of 168-4, England painfully fell six runs short of the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method’s necessary score.
Australia now leads the points-based multi-format series 12-0 as a result, ending England’s hopes of a draw.
After 8.4 overs, with England two runs ahead of DLS at 69-1, rain had also hampered the tourists’ chase, but it subsided enough for play to resume.
