The opposition and the journalism community staged nationwide demonstrations against the “controversial” Prevention of Electronic Crimes (Peca) (Amendment) Bill 2025 on Tuesday.
The Senate also approved the revisions today after they had already passed the National Assembly with ease. According to the administration, the changes are intended to tighten the nose around people who spread false information and fake news on social media sites.
Amid protests from the opposition benches, the upper house approved the Peca Amendment Bill 2025 and the Digital Nation Pakistan Bill 2024 during today’s session. These bills seek to establish a digital society, economy, and governance.
The opposition parties and organizations representing journalists united in nationwide demonstrations against disputed changes to the Peca law, which they deemed “controversial” due to its “lack of clarity.”
