Tokyo: Police in Okinawa, Japan, announced Thursday that two US marines are being investigated for suspected rapes. This is the most recent in a series of assault cases that have infuriated locals.
About 54,000 US military personnel are based in Japan, primarily on the island of Okinawa, which lies east of Taiwan and in the subtropical region of the country.
“A US marine in his 20s is suspected of raping a Japanese woman at an American military base in March, and is also suspected of injuring another woman,” according to an AFP report.
According to the official, the second marine, who is also in his 20s, is accused of raping a Japanese woman at a US post in January.
