As majority Americans, for the first time, consider even moderate drinking to be hazardous, a survey released Wednesday by analytics firm Gallup revealed that adult alcohol consumption in the US is at its lowest level ever.
According to Gallup’s most recent annual Consumption Habits poll, over 54% of Americans reported drinking alcohol, up from 58% in 2024 and 62% in 2023.
In Gallup’s nearly nine decades of tracking, the number is below the previous record low of 55% set in 1958.
Due to rising interest rates and inflation, alcohol sales have been declining since the pandemic drinking spree. Public health officials are increasingly warning spirit manufacturers that even small levels of alcohol consumption are linked to seven different types of cancer.
