The former local council member is well-known for criticizing Mr. Putin and Russia’s aggressive invasion of Ukraine with a fair amount of candor.
According to Mr. Nadezhdin, he gave the electoral authorities approximately 100,000 signatures.
His application now needs to be reviewed by the electoral commission.
The commission has the authority to completely disqualify the candidate if any “irregularities” are discovered with any of the submitted signatures. Yekaterina Duntsova, an independent lawmaker, was declared unable to run in December after the election commission discovered 100 “mistakes” on her application.
Vladimir Putin, the president at the moment, has already registered to run as an independent in the March election, which he will almost surely win and serve another six years.
Mr. Nadezhdin uploaded a picture of himself standing in front of multiple boxes carrying papers with the signatures of his followers just after today’s deadline for turning in the signatures.
“The product of thousands of laborers over many long nights is what I am most proud of. “Those boxes hold the outcome of the long lines you endured in the bitter cold,” he posted on X, the previous Twitter.
Across the nation, thousands of Russians have lined up in the bitter cold to sign the list of supporters of his candidacy.
