LONDON: Following Britain’s contentious divorce from the European Union five years ago, Prime Minister Keir Starmer of the United Kingdom was scheduled to sign an agreement on Monday to forge tighter ties with the union at a historic summit.
Following late-night negotiations to settle disagreements on important issues, EU officials said on Monday that an agreement had been achieved to restore relations with the UK.
Three articles were authorized for signature by EU member states, mostly on defense and, following a last-minute agreement, the contentious topic of fishing rights.
Starmer has advocated for stronger links between the UK and its European neighbors. The EU agreement agreed with the former Conservative administration of the United Kingdom, according to the Labour government, “isn’t working for anyone”.
