Authorities announced on Monday that 19 people were missing after a landslide at a gold mine in Indonesia’s easternmost area of Papua was caused by heavy rain.
According to Abdul Muhari, the spokesperson for Indonesia’s disaster mitigation agency, a landslide occurred late Friday in a small-scale mine operated by locals in the Arfak mountains in the province of West Papua due to torrential rain.
At least one person was killed, four were injured, and 19 are still unaccounted for after the landslide struck the miners’ makeshift shelters, he continued.
According to officials, at least 40 rescuers, including police and military personnel, had been sent out to look for the missing.
