Muhammad Yunus, the temporary leader of Bangladesh, “needs to remain” in office in order to guarantee a smooth handover of power, a cabinet member and special adviser to Yunus stated on Friday.
According to insiders in his office and a political ally, Yunus, the 84-year-old Nobel Peace Prize winner who assumed power following a public revolt last year, had threatened to resign if parties did not support him.
Since the student-led uprising that deposed then-prime minister Sheikh Hasina in August 2024, the South Asian country has been experiencing political unrest, with parties demonstrating in the streets over a number of demands.
