Despite concerns over his aspirations for Canada to become the 51st US state, the White House announced Thursday that President Donald Trump will attend a Group of Seven leaders’ conference in Canada next month.
“President Trump will travel to the G7 leaders’ summit in Canada from June 15th through the 17th,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt informed reporters during a daily briefing.
Trump’s frequent calls for Canada to join the US and his broad tariffs against the nation have soured relations between Washington and Ottawa.
However, relations thawed when Trump won Canada’s general election in April and newly elected Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney paid him a visit at the White House earlier this month.
