In an effort to put further pressure on international steel manufacturers and intensify his trade war, US President Donald Trump announced on Friday that he will raise tariffs on imported steel and aluminum from 25% to 50%.
“A 25% increase will be implemented. At a rally in Pennsylvania, he declared, “We’re going to increase the tariffs on steel entering the United States from 25% to 50%, which will further secure the steel industry in the United States.”
Just outside Pittsburgh, where he was promoting an agreement between Nippon Steel and US Steel, Trump announced the increased tariffs. Trump said that the $14.9 billion agreement, together with the tariff hike, would help keep American steel workers’ jobs.
