As he said goodbye to graduating students “from down the street, across the country and around the world,” Harvard University President Alan Garber got a standing ovation.
“Around the world — just as it should be,” he continued. As he emphasized that international students were attending the graduation with their families despite threats from the US government of President Donald Trump, the students’ applause lasted for nearly a minute.
According to one student who spoke to AFP, the standing ovation was “revealing of the community’s pride and approval.”
A federal judge announced Thursday that she will extend an order preventing President Trump’s administration from immediately removing Harvard University’s authority to admit international students, while graduating students cheered in the university.
