As bowlers dominated Wednesday’s opening day of the World Test Championship final at Lord’s, South Africa’s Kagiso Rabada was left wondering what may have been despite taking five Australia wickets.
Beau Webster, Australia’s leading scorer, was on eight when Rabada hit him on the pad.
South Africa chose not to review when umpire Richard Illingworth rejected the LBL appeal. Replays, however, indicated that the ball would have struck the middle stump.
After Webster scored 72 in Australia’s 212 all out, South Africa had fallen to 43-4 at stumps, a 169-run deficit.
Rabada acknowledged his error after collecting 5-51 to move up to fourth position on South Africa’s all-time wicket-taking chart, ahead of Allan Donald.
