The Supreme Court’s decision to reinstate 77 reserved seats, 22 of which are in the Lower House, has significantly changed the political complexion of the National Assembly. With a two-thirds majority now in place, the ruling coalition’s legislative authority has been greatly increased.
After reserved seats were restored, the number of members in the ruling alliance rose from 213 to 232, according to figures, providing the coalition substantial control over the lower house, which has 336 members. It is anticipated that this increased majority will increase the government’s capacity to enact important laws and constitutional modifications without opposition.
